Where has your faith become a container rather than contact? Where are you actually pressed into a decaying situation?

"You are the salt of the earth." Are. Not should become, not try to be. Jesus is describing, not commanding — the command comes later. In a world without refrigeration, salt was not a seasoning first. It was a preservative. You packed it around meat to hold back the rot, because decay is what happens to everything left to itself. That is the assumption underneath the metaphor: the world is decaying. Not because it is uniquely bad right now, but because that is the direction unattended things go. And Jesus says his people are what is packed into it to slow that down. Notice that salt only works on contact and only in small quantities. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Salt and light do opposite jobs, and Jesus gives both. Salt works invisibly, buried in the thing it preserves. Light works by being seen. So the Christian life is not one or the other. It is hidden faithfulness *and* visible witness — quiet integrity nobody notices, and a life that is unmistakably different when people look. "A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." That is not an instruction. It is a fact. There is no such thing as a secret city on a hilltop; the geography settles it. Which raises an uncomfortable possibility. Happy Thanksgiving. "Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house." The image is almost comic. Strike the flint, get the flame going, and then carefully set a bowl over it. Nobody does that. It defeats the entire purpose, and it eventually puts the flame out. Jesus assumes you know that — and then leaves you to ask why you do it anyway. The baskets are usually respectable. Not wanting to seem pushy. Not knowing enough. Here is the command the whole passage has been building to, and the last phrase is the one that keeps it from becoming vanity. "Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Earlier in this same sermon Jesus says do not do your good works to be seen by others. Now he says let your light shine before others so they see your good works. It looks like a contradiction and it is not — the difference is entirely in the last clause. Works done to be seen end with people thinking well of you.
