What is actually costing you peace this season? Is it the schedule, or is it something between you and a person?

It is the second week of Advent, when the church traditionally turns to peace — the Prince of Peace who came into our world to bring peace between God and man, peace in our hearts, and peace to a world that desperately needs it. And yet, Drake said, if we are honest, peace is not what we feel at Christmas. It turns out this is one of the most stressful seasons of a person's life. There is money, there is travel, there is family, there is the gap between the season you imagined and the one you are actually having. "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder.' ... But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment." Most of us have kept the sixth commandment comfortably. Jesus takes that comfort away in a sentence. He is not saying anger and murder are the same crime. He is saying they are the same *root*. Murder is what anger becomes when it is fed long enough and nothing stops it. Now Jesus does something startling. He interrupts worship. "If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you..." Picture it. You have made the journey to Jerusalem. You have brought the animal. You are at the front, gift in hand, in the most sacred moment available to you — and a face comes to mind. Jesus says stop. Right there. And notice whose grievance it is. Not "if you have something against your brother." If *he* has something against *you*. It might not even be your fault. It might be unfair. It does not matter; the responsibility to move is still yours. This is God saying he would rather have a reconciled person than an uninterrupted service. What is the actual first step — a text, a call, a conversation? When this week will you take it?

"Leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." Go. Then come. That order is the whole instruction. We would prefer the reverse — finish the worship, feel spiritually strengthened, and then maybe, at some better time, when things have cooled off, when they seem more receptive, deal with the person. Jesus says go now. The gift will keep. And notice that he expects you to come back. This is not a punishment or a disqualification from worship. It is a sequence.
