Rahab — Joshua 2:15

God works through unlikely people

The Big Idea

Memory Verse

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”"

Rahab had every reason to be frightened and she did the brave thing anyway. The verse says why that is possible for anybody.

Conversation Starters

For the dinner table or the car line this week.

  1. Who is the most unlikely helper you know?
  2. What is one thing you think you are too young or too small for?
  3. Why do you think God picked Rahab?

Family Activity · 10 min

The Breath Lift

Lay a zip-top sandwich bag flat on the table with a drinking straw taped into its opening, so the bag is sealed except for the straw. Stack two or three books on top. Now guess: can one person's breath lift them? Take turns blowing. The books rise. Then the question: what is the weakest-looking thing in this house that turned out to be strong?

Pray Together

God, thank You that You do not need the obvious person. Use me this week, especially in the parts where I feel too small.

What We Did Sunday

We learned that God works through unlikely people. Two spies hid in the house of a woman from Jericho, the last person anyone expected to help them — and she ended up in Jesus' family tree.

What they learned Sunday

The least likely person in Jericho

Joshua sent two spies into Jericho, and they ended up at the house of a woman named Rahab, built right into the city wall. When the king's soldiers came to her door, she had every reason to point them up the stairs. Instead she hid the spies under drying flax on her roof and sent the soldiers off the wrong way. Then she told the spies she knew their God was the real God, and asked them to keep her family safe. They promised: tie a red cord in your window. She let them down on a rope, tied the cord, and when Israel came back her whole family was saved. The point of the week is the person, not the plan: God works through unlikely people.

  • Why was Rahab an unlikely person to help?
  • What was the red cord for?
  • What is something you think you are too young or too small for?

The soldiers were already at the door.

Joshua 2:15

Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall.

Around the table

This Sunday: two spies, a king's soldiers, and the last person anybody expected to help.

Who is the most unlikely hero you can think of, real or made up?

She hid two men under piles of drying plants on her roof. With soldiers at the door.

Where is the best hiding place in this house? Nobody has to tell the truth.

Nothing to prepare tonight. A new quarter starts tomorrow.

Today they learned that God works through unlikely people — starting with a woman in Jericho who had every reason to hand the spies over.

Why did Rahab help?

The red cord was the sign. Everybody inside the house with the cord in its window was safe, no matter whose family they were.

If you could keep one thing in this house safe, what would it be?

Who is the person in your class nobody would pick for anything? In Jericho, that person was Rahab.

When has somebody surprised you by being the one who helped?

Rahab is in Jesus' family tree. Matthew lists her by name, right there in the first chapter of the New Testament.

What is one thing you think you are too something to do?

This week's mission

The thing you're too something for

Write down one sentence about yourself that starts with I'm too. Too shy, too young, too small. Then once this week, do one small thing that sentence says you can't, for somebody else's sake. Nobody else needs to know. You will.
