Think of the last time you thanked someone out loud and really meant it. What was it for, and what made you finally say it?

The reading that night was 1 Thessalonians 5 — rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances. The leader stopped on one word: give thanks IN all circumstances, not FOR everything. What difference does that one word make?

He said our job is not to be successful, it is to be faithful by trusting him. What would change about the week ahead of you if you measured it that way instead of the way you usually do?

He told about meeting a man burned head to toe who cut him off mid-pity: "Don't you feel sorry for me. This is the best thing that has ever happened to me." The man said his scars had brought more hope to people than he could have dreamed of without them. What do you make of an answer like that?

The line was that gratitude is sometimes not being broken over what is lost, but rejoicing over what is left. What is left in your life that you have never really looked at that way?

Patrick said he built his identity on accomplishments, and when the recession took his business in 2009 he no longer knew who he was. Now he prays one thing for his eight-year-old son — not money or success, but that he grows up knowing, loving and serving God. What are you actually praying for the people closest to you?

That night the room prayed out loud together — for the sick, for people who mourn, for people who do not yet know Jesus. Say one name out loud now that you want this group praying for, and commit to praying for someone else's name every day this week.
